More than just a bookstore and café, we’re a gathering place where neighbors, travelers, and book lovers come together to share stories, laughter, and warm conversations over delicious coffee—often with a little reggae humming happily in the background. Guests love to say Black Cat is “super duper cute,” and from the moment you step inside, it feels less like a shop and more like coming home.
Our shelves are filled with an eclectic mix of new and used books—beloved classics, local authors, metaphysical curiosities, and delightful surprises waiting to be discovered. This chapter of Black Cat began on December 1, 2023, when the shop was lovingly reopened after being closed since the very beginning of COVID. Previously open for 17 years, Black Cat rested quietly for nearly three years before being dusted off, made extra cute, and brought back to life. Meet Rebecca
Black Cat Books and Coffee was discovered almost by accident. A visit to Truth or Consequences from Albuquerque—for soul-searching and long soaks in the hot springs—led to the find of a closed bookstore, quietly tucked behind tie-dye shirts. Something about it called out. Days were spent tracking down the owner and imagining what it might look like to bring the Black Cat back to life. After traveling full-time from Illinois and leaving behind a career as a paramedic, it felt destined to find a project that truly resonated. I moved to Truth or Consequences 1 month later in February 2023.
What began as simple curiosity soon became purpose. This small desert town—its poets, shopkeepers, wealth of knowledge, and vibrant community spirit—made a lasting impression. Gratitude runs deep for the support and encouragement that followed, and for the opportunity to guide Black Cat as it grows. Today, it’s lovingly nurtured as a community platform, celebrating authors, artists, creatives, and all curious souls who wander through its doors.
